The Teachers' Standards 2012
Thursday, 28 July 2011 15:11

The DfE has just published the Teachers' Standards to be effective from September 2012. I wonder how schools will implement them and if they will form part of an INSET day in advance of 2012. Or will teachers be expected to get to know them in their own time.

Here Sally Coates, Chair of the Teachers' Standards Review talks about the new standards.

Earlier this week I spent some time looking at the finer details in the standards from the point of view of an ICT enthusiast and noted that not once is the use of ICT or new technology referred to. Please prove me wrong!

No mention of ICT may seem irrelevant and could well be so, but I really felt that this would have been a perfect opportunity to ensure that all teachers make good use of ICT in their teaching, when appropriate from here on. I have deliberated over this fact and asked myself if it really matters. After all, other subjects get a mention, so, is this just me being childish and over protective of my subject? Or, is the Government saying that the use of ICT is no longer important? We are all awaiting the curriculum review, so this will no doubt give us the answers we are really after!

After much poring over each new standard I have come to the conclusion that ICT can be found throughout them in many guises. Here are a few examples:

I have some great news for schools with learners with special needs. CEOP (The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) has just released a suite of SEN resources comprising three videos / cartoons with accompanying lesson plans.
